I need advice on this one.
I know it’s now November, but I keep a small herb collection in my kitchen (basil, parsley, stevia, and chocolate mint). I’m having some issues with space. My kitchen is pretty big, but in order for my herbs to get adequate sunlight, they have to sit on the table or the counter…which is a problem for me if I want to use those surfaces. So I have been looking into something to transfer the pots/herbs to.
First, I considered plant stands, but they were either too expensive or not big enough. I considered installing a shelf…but couldn’t find anything I was happy with that was worth the price. I looked into sofa tables, but they’re also too wide and too expensive.
And then I found these and these on Ikea’s website. (I’m starting to think I spend too much time on this website.) Basically, I would use these hooks to hang the pots from these poles (or something similar–I haven’t looked at all of my options yet) which are screwed into the wall. If it actually works, this is a route I would like to go.
Now, the reason I’m posting about this: I’m not very good at picking out pots for my plants.I would prefer to go with the first pot, but they’re only about 5 inches wide, while the second pot is about 14 inches wide. Both, though, are 5 inches deep. This wouldn’t be such a problem if my herbs were still babies, but they’re fully grown. Do you think taking my herbs out of their large pots and putting them in smaller ones would kill them? I don’t mind if their growth is slowed, because they grow so quickly right now that I can hardly keep up (particularly the basil). But if it will kill them, I won’t do it. Here’s how my herbs are doing now:
Basil: It is currently in a pot that is 12 inches wide. The basil plant itself is 18 inches tall.
Parsley: The pot is 10 inches wide. The plant is 8 inches tall.
Chocolate Mint: It’s looking kind of pale…. Anyway, the pot is 9 inches wide and the plant is about 6 inches tall.
Stevia: The pot is about 8 inches wide and the plant is about 7 inches tall or something. I trimmed it recently. It gets really tall. It’s actually the only one I’m not worried about transferring.
So if I put them in those Ikea pots, would the do OK?
ETA: Basil alone needs 8-10 inches of room for its roots, so this idea is out. I’m running out of ideas. -_-
