Last year around this time, I tried 52 Weeks of Decluttering with The Organized Housewife.
It didn’t go well.
It did to a certain point! But there were so many things that simply didn’t apply to me, that I wound up just forgetting about it.
One thing I managed to do, though, was organize my nail polish. My nail polish used to be held in a nice trifle bowl that my husband’s aunt gave us as a wedding present. But once my collection started growing, I had to find another solution.
The picture above is what I started out with. It was actually worse than that (and included a very large bag of cotton balls). I got so sick of having to dig through this! So I decided to go through my nail polish and figure out what I needed to throw out. Turns out, quite a few things.
This is a little more than half of what I threw out. These ones were either dry or too thick and gummy to be used again. (The green one had separated and I couldn’t get it mix properly again.)
After that, I put my nail polishes into groups, by color (of course). I found a nice chevron box at Wal-Mart for $3 a few months ago that I was using to hold cat toys. But now they have so many that I needed a bigger basket (which was taken care of by the Dollar Tree). So I had a nice, empty box that I was able to use for my nail polishes!
The little things, like the electronic nail file, were a little hard to organize, so I just laid them on top. And now I can see my nail polishes again!
The box is sitting on the bottom shelf of my end table. You can’t even see it, but it’s easy to get to. Which is another thing I had grown tired of with the trifle dish–it was heavy and I had to carry it into the living room when I wanted to do my nails (more room and I could watch TV while they dried). I’m pretty happy with this decision so far!
I found another, better use for the trifle bowl, as well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t involve making trifle. I’ll get to that another time. 🙂
How do you keep your nail polishes organized?
